Physical activation sintering

Microwave atmosphere laboratory furnace (1)

Spark plasma sintering (SPS) is the development of a spark sintering technology.

SPS(Spark Plasma Sintering) is a newly developed process which make possible sintering high quality materials in short periods by charging the intervals between powder particles with electrical energy and high sintering pressure.

SPS systems offer many advantages (ex. rapid sintering, sintering less additives, uniform sintering, low running cost, easily operation) over conventional systems using hot press (HP) sintering, hot isostatic pressing (HIP) or atmospheric furnaces.
And the SPS process applies to many advanced material, FGM (functionally graded materials), Fine ceramics, Amorphous materials, Target materials, Thermoelectric generator, Nano-composites.

The powder to be sintered is held in a graphite die and stage, between stainless steel electrodes, also providing the pressure. The whole sample compartment can be set under vacuum. A current of up to 20,000 amperes is sent through the graphite die and through the sample itself. It is given as a DC pulse, switched on/off at selected frequencies. The current heats the sample, and sparks are also formed at the initial of each spark, between close laying particles, where necks are formed. This ideal neck formation then facilitates material diffusion, and sintering progresses rapidly.
